About the Bridging Open Work Permit
A Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) lets you keep working in Canada while your permanent residence application is being finalized, if your existing work permit is about to expire. It “bridges” the gap between your current temporary status and the day your permanent residence is approved.
Who Qualifies
You may be eligible for a BOWP if:
- You have valid temporary resident status in Canada as a worker
- Your current work permit expires within 4 months
- You’ve applied for permanent residence under an eligible economic class — including Express Entry-managed programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, Canadian Experience Class) and certain Provincial Nominee Program streams
- You’ve received confirmation your PR application meets initial requirements (e.g. a positive eligibility assessment)

A BOWP is an open work permit — you’re not tied to a specific employer while your PR application is processed, giving you flexibility to change jobs or employers during the wait.
